Thniks and thnimis are quigutl devices that communicate audio and video over great distances. (Thniks communicate just audio, and thnimis communicate both.) Although humans generally aren't allowed to own them, some people, especially royals, do with special permission from the Tanamoot. Thniks and thnimis have corresponding thniks and thnimis with which they communicate; unlike modern phones, for example, they can only contact that one specific device. Many characters throughout the books use these devices to communicate with people in other countries.
